The internet moving timeline

Providers can often install within a few days, but popular dates fill up fast, especially at the end of the month and during the summer moving season. Working backward from your move date keeps you in control.

6–8 weeks before you move

  1. Get your new address exactly right. Include the apartment or unit number. Internet availability is checked address by address, and two buildings on the same street can have different providers.
  2. Find out which providers serve it. Ask us to check (it’s free), or look up the address on the FCC National Broadband Map at broadbandmap.fcc.gov. The map shows which companies report service at each location.
  3. Check your current contract. Look for an early cancellation fee, a price-lock end date, and any equipment you rent.

3–4 weeks before

  1. Choose a plan and book installation. Pick the date you get the keys, or the day before if the building lets you. Ask whether the plan uses self-install (a kit in the mail) or a technician visit.
  2. Write down the order number, install window and the name of the person you spoke with.

1–2 weeks before

  1. Confirm the appointment and whether someone 18+ must be home.
  2. Schedule the end date for service at your old home. Pick the day after you move out, so you’re not offline while packing.
  3. Label your router and cables. Put them in an “open first” box with chargers and your laptop.

Move-in day and the first week

  1. Place the router centrally, up high and away from the microwave, fish tanks and thick walls.
  2. Run a speed test from a device near the router and from the room where you work. If speeds are far below your plan, call the provider during your first week, while the install is still fresh.
  3. Change the Wi‑Fi name and password and write them down for the family.

Transfer your service or switch providers?

If your current provider serves the new address, a transfer is usually the simplest path. You keep your account and often your equipment. But a move is also the one time you can switch without any hassle, and a newcomer offer can beat what you pay today. Compare both before you decide.

Keep in mind that provider names are changing in 2026. Charter bought Cox in August 2026, and Cox areas are moving to the Spectrum name. Verizon now owns Frontier. If you’re moving within one of these areas, the company on your bill may change, but that doesn’t mean you have to switch.

Questions to ask before you sign up

  • What is the monthly price after any promotional period ends?
  • Are there installation, activation or equipment rental fees?
  • Is there a contract or an early cancellation fee?
  • Is there a data cap?
  • What are the typical download and upload speeds at this address?

Providers are required by the FCC to show a broadband “nutrition label” for their plans, with the monthly price, how long any promo rate lasts, typical speeds and data allowance. Ask for it, and compare labels side by side.

Tips for renters and apartment movers

Ask the leasing office which providers are wired into the building before you sign the lease. Some communities have a bulk internet deal included in rent, and some buildings are only wired for one or two companies. If you want fiber or a satellite dish, get written permission for any drilling or mounting. New construction may not be connected yet, so ask whether the building has an active service line.

Returning your old equipment

If you rent a modem or router, return it when you cancel. Most providers accept returns at a store or through a shipping partner. Keep the receipt or tracking number until your final bill shows the equipment as returned. Unreturned equipment fees are one of the most common surprises after a move.

Have a backup plan

If your install date slips, your phone’s hotspot can cover a few days of email and video calls. Check your mobile plan’s hotspot allowance first. Public Wi‑Fi at libraries and coffee shops works in a pinch, too.

The easiest way to skip the research is to let us do it. Share your new address, and a specialist will compare the providers that serve it and help you book installation for move-in day.

FAQs

Quick answers

Need a quick answer about your address? Call (888) 263‑2395.

01How far in advance should I set up internet before moving?+

Start comparing providers 6–8 weeks before your move and book installation about 3–4 weeks ahead. End-of-month and summer dates fill up first.

02Can I take my internet provider with me when I move?+

If your provider serves your new address, you can usually transfer your service. If it doesn’t, you’ll need a new provider. We can check both for you.

03Do I need to be home for internet installation?+

For a technician visit, usually yes, and someone 18 or older often needs to be there. Many plans offer self-install kits that you set up yourself.

04What should I do with my old router when I move?+

If you rent it from your provider, return it when you cancel and keep the receipt or tracking number. If you own it, check that it works with your new provider.

05Is your moving help free?+

Yes. Comparing providers and ordering through us is free, with no obligation. We may be paid by the provider you choose.
